Chapel Street Wines is an independent local wine shop in the centre of Lancaster, owned and run by Adam Ventress and Liam Shannon since the beginning of 2020.
We stock a unique selection of around 250 carefully selected, quality wines from around the world, for a wide variety of tastes and budgets, but our main specialities are regional Italian, and classic French, and we have a particularly strong range of organic, and vegan-friendly wines, including some excellent low sulphite and natural wines.
The idea for the shop came simply through our own love and enjoyment of wine. We wanted to create a shop that was the kind of place we would love to go to ourselves, and be spoilt for choice, with so many good bottles on the shelves. A destination shop for wine enthusiasts, a place of discovery for people getting into wine, but also somewhere that isn't intimidating to people who want to come in and find something familiar and inexpensive, but better quality than they might find in the supermarket.
We were also inspired by wine shops that we have regularly visited ourselves in the past. There is nothing quite like exploring a treasure trove of a well stocked wine shop, and we want to give people that experience at Chapel Street Wines.
Inevitably, what is on the shelves largely reflects our own tastes. It's much easier and also more honest to sell wines which we can be genuinely enthusiastic about, and we don't sell anything that we don't think is good.
We endeavour to provide a friendly face and in depth knowledge of the wines we sell to help guide you.
Wine is not just about the drink itself, it's about the story, the place and the people behind it. We look for wines with provenance and a sense of place. The majority of our wines come from small to medium sized producers, passionate independents or ethical co-operatives, who value quality and authenticity rather than mass production. Producers who make characterful, honest wines which are true to the variety, the terroir and specific to their region, with a commitment to sustainability.
We are strong advocates of the slogan "Drink less but drink better" in other words, quality over quantity. Rather than regularly drinking mediocre mass produced wines from the supermarket that will go down easily but be quickly forgotten, it's well worth treating yourself to fewer bottles but better quality wines from your local specialist that you can really enjoy and savour. It probably won't cost any more overall, possibly even less, it's healthier, gives more pleasure, and supports both your local shop and authentic independent producers. Win-win!

I try to update vintages as and when they change, but we cannot necessarily guarantee availability of the specific vintage of each wine as listed, it will always be subject to what is available from our suppliers at the time. We endeavour to keep the list updated, but please do not take this list as a absolute guarantee of what we have in stock at a given time.
I have marked on which wines are vegan friendly (no animal products) and which are certified organic. Many are both. These are just the ones we know for certain, other wines may be vegan friendly, but are not labelled as such or we don't have the information from the producer. Many wines may also be organic in practise, but not officially certified. Please ask if unsure.
